About Jeju Island, UNESCO Heritage Site

We are proud of all of our 2023 RIMAN Retreats Qualifiers, and we can’t wait to welcome them to RIMAN’s heritage homeland, Jeju Island. You may know of our sustainable use of some of Jeju’s most efficacious ingredients, but we thought we’d share a bit more about the island for a sneak peek into what our qualifiers will experience on this once-in-a-lifetime trip!

Jeju Island is a stunning UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) Global Geo- Park full of volcanic wonders, luscious waterfalls, sandy beaches, and so much more. Formed nearly 2 million years ago, Jeju is Korea’s youngest volcanic island, and many of its volcanic features have been preserved, such as its lava tube caves. The prominent volcanic landform of the island is Mount Hallasan, which is located at the center of the island.

Jeju has beautiful, mild weather and crisp air, with constant land and sea breezes. Landscapes boast a variety of beauties, from alpine plants to colorful corals under the sea! As Jeju is a UNESCO site, it is self-governing; this allows for the establishment of its own organization to create economic benefits and uphold conservation of its geo-heritage.  Education of the residents and thorough training of the guides are just two of the many steps taken to ensure proper understanding of the importance of this UNESCO geo-park. Jeju is considered one of the natural wonders of the world, and the opportunity to experience its beauty is one worth celebrating!

Jeju Island experiences bliss temperatures during Autumn, especially October. In October, the maximum daytime temperature is 19°C (65⃘⃘̊̊̊°F) in Jeju City and 21°C (69°F) in Seogwipo (weather&climate.com). Jeju’s October average humidity is 66.9%. While rainfall can be common in Jeju, October is considered one of the best months for temperate weather, so it is often advised to visit at this time! The daily maximum for the UV index in October is typically a 6.

For sightseeing, Jeju Island is home to a variety of lovely landmarks. Jeju Stone Park, for example, holds a variety of unique rocks and sculptures and is a great place to dive into Jeju heritage. Learn about the legends and tales associated with each statue, such as the story shown here, in which two brothers were rumored to turn to stone, their morose expressions frozen in time, all because they thought they had consumed their mother in their evening stew! Many such statues await your arrival to tell their tales.

Another beautiful landmark on Jeju is the Jeongbang Waterfall, which is located on the outskirts of Seogwipo. This waterfall is the only one in all of Korea that plunges its waters directly into the ocean! Chasing waterfalls is highly recommended as a Jeju activity, so after Jeongbang, check out Cheonjeyeon Falls, Sojeongbang Falls, and Eongtto Falls.

Speaking of well-preserved, volcanic features, you must visit the Manjanggul Cave. This cave was formed hundreds of thousands of years ago by lava and is one of the longest lava tube caves in the world.

Prefer to stay where the sun shines? Then your go-to location would be Hamdeok beach. This beach is only half an hour east of Jeju City and has soft sands, shallow, turquoise waters, and sand bars.

A trip to Jeju Island would not be complete without visiting the iconic Mount Hallasan. If you like a good workout, hike the mountain. If you enjoy therapeutic exercise and scenery, walk one of the gorgeous, scenic trails and enjoy the rich environment. If you plan on hiking mount Hallasan, it is advised to arrive and begin before 8 am, as it is an entire day’s journey.

Are you an early riser? UNESCO heritage site Seongsan IIchulbong, or Sunrise Peak, is a beautiful sunrise viewing spot. Its looks like a giant fortress with its large, rocky structure, but this mountain is actually an extinct volcano with a crater at its peak! The climb is only 45 minutes, round trip.

If all this sightseeing makes you hungry, you’ll have to try a Jeju tangerine during your stay! Did you know 95% of “Korean tangerines” are grown on Jeju Island? The reason these tangerines are so delicious is due to their growth in the Island’s ideal conditions, with fertile, volcanic, rich soil. The local government of Jeju has strong policies and regulations to ensure the cleanliness and safety of the farming system for this citrus.

Jeju is home to some delicious dishes that are a must try! Jeju black pork is the most famous Jeju dish, also known as Heuk Dwaeji. This Jeju food is so popular, there is a whole street of restaurants devoted to serving black pork. The Jeju black pig is only found and bred on Jeju itself.  Another common must try is the Korean rice roll, kimbap. Kim Manbok is a famous restaurant in Jeju that sells a unique presentation of egg and abalone kimbap. Guksu, Korean noodles, is another delicious specialty food of Jeju. Much like Heuk Dwaeji, there is an entire street dedicated simply to Guksu restaurants. Other must tries of Jeju include seafood hot pot stew (Haemultang), fresh abalone, seafood platter from Haenyeos, seafood Ramen, hair tail fish (Galchi Jorim), and the snack foods from the Market. To finish your meal, a sweet treat common in Jeju and Udo island is peanut ice cream (Udo is a small island right off JeJu, home to white sand beaches, an emerald sea, and of course, peanut ice cream).

In conclusion, Jeju Island stands as a captivating destination, offering a harmonious blend of natural wonders, rich cultural heritage, and mouthwatering cuisine. From volcanic landscapes and breathtaking waterfalls to the picturesque beaches and the majestic Mount Hallasan, Jeju Island is a haven for anyone and everyone, whether you’re a nature enthusiast, adventure seeker, or serial relaxer. As you explore this remarkable island, you’ll be captivated by its unique landmarks, such as Jeju Stone Park and the Jeongbang Waterfall, each holding tales and legends that add to the island’s charm. Whether you immerse yourself in the island’s natural beauty, embrace its cultural heritage, or savor its delectable dishes, a journey to Jeju Island promises an unforgettable experience that will leave you with cherished memories for a lifetime. We can’t wait to see you in Jeju!
