I have spent many years trying to get the men in my life to take skincare seriously. Picking off the dry patches from my significant other’s nose and urging my dad to always apply his sunscreen seems to have me on repeat. But skincare routines aren’t just for women, and men can benefit greatly from adopting one of their own. The first step is understanding the skin they’re in to know what products should be incorporated.
Male vs. Female Skin

Those born male at birth (AMAB), on average, have thicker skin than women – roughly 20% thicker, to be specific.1 This is because they have more collagen, which is the main structural protein in our bodies that establish skin scaffolding. This thickness gives male skin a firmer appearance, whereas women’s skin is more delicate and can show signs of aging more quickly.
Men also have more active sebaceous glands, and therefore more pores – often bigger ones at that. In comparison to women, their sebum production is twice as great, allowing men to be more prone to an oily skin type.2 It also causes their skin to be at a lower pH (more acidic). With all of these combined factors men are more prone to acne.
Finally, many men shave; shaving is a rather irritating process as it mechanically removes layers of skin along with hair follicles, and without proper post-shaving treatment, it leaves men more susceptible to skin irritation.
Acknowledging the abundance of oil, greater chance of acne, and greater chance of irritation, the next step is finding products that maintain a balance such that skin is healthy, moisturized, and soothed.
Skincare Routine with RIMAN
Cleanse
The first step is prep, in which a proper cleansing system not only regulates and removes excess sebum, but it also clears the pores for proper absorption of future ingredients.
