The sun emits three different types of rays with varying wavelengths: UVA, UVB, and UVC. UVA radiation encompasses 95-97% of the total radiation that reaches Earth’s surface and can penetrate deeply into the skin, which can indirectly cause skin cancer by damaging DNA. [1] UVB is the main cause of your typical sunburn but can also indirectly cause skin cancer.[2]
UVA and UVB radiation can also damage collagen fibers and destroy vitamin A in the skin, destruction that can cause the appearance of premature aging.[3] Skin aging caused by overexposure to the sun is known as photo-aging, or extrinsic aging, and believe it or not, clinically detectable photoaging may be as high as 80-90% in European and North American populations. Most notable signs of photo damaged skin are hyperpigmentation, chronic redness, dryness, and excess sagging due to collagen loss.
The Good
Despite all these potential issues that may convince even the most adventurous person to stay inside forever, there ARE benefits to sun exposure, good ones at that. The biggest and most studied benefit to sun exposure is the ability of the sun to boost your body’s Vitamin D supply. WHO actually suggests that a disease burden greater than that of skin cancer results from low levels of UV radiation exposure, which can cause autoimmune diseases and musculoskeletal issues.[5] Vitamin D aids in resistance to certain diseases and helps regulate calcium for bone and teeth strength.[6] Studies also postulate that sun exposure can regulate your circadian rhythm for better sleep, can regulate your mood for a more positive disposition, and can lower blood pressure.[7],[8]
